To maximise the use of available funding, acquisitions are prioritised using an Environmental Levy Audit tool. Items assessed in the audit include environmental signficance, strategic location, level of threat from potential impacting processes, community benefit, scenic amenity, management costs, value for money, alternative sources of funds and other options of protection. Consideration is also given to whether the land is on the market and whether the likely price matches the funds available.
The Environmental Levy was expanded in the 2010/11 budget to provide critical funding to address a broader range of environmental issues facing the Fraser Coast but still includes the option for future purchase of land.
Buying land is not the only method Council is using to protect environmentally significant land. Council is developing a regional planning scheme and land use strategy which will provide a planning framework for improved protection of significant natural areas.
